On May 6, 2012, the DLH Foundation will hold the fifth annual "Deana's Birthday Gift" wine tasting event at Vista Valley
Country Club, from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM. The Foundation is pleased to report that last year's event raised nearly $20,000 to support the mission of
the DLH Foundation. If you joined us last year, we look forward to seeing you again this year. If you haven't attended one of
our events, we hope you will join us! This year's event will once again
feature wine tasting, a raffle, an auction and more.
Register for this year's event or find
out about making a donation.
Deana Hughes was a special
person who had an incredible effect on the people she met. She enriched the lives of everyone who knew her because she was so
sincerely interested in others. She was ever engaged in learning and the process of self-improvement. Throughout her social and
business relationships, she endeavored to help young women reshape their lives - not only by providing support and willing
friendship, but also by serving as an example of self-confidence and social grace.
In late 2006, at the age of 39, Deana was diagnosed with gastro-esophageal signet cell adenocarcinoma. This pernicious form of
cancer affects less than one percent of all cancer victims and is not typically seen in women nor in people under age 50. Family
and friends were devastated by the news and by the bleak prognosis, as cancers of internal organs often become quite advanced
before symptoms manifest, thus making treatment more difficult. Throughout her aggressive radiation and chemotherapy treatment,
Deana's selfless personality shone through as she maintained her sense of humor while continually focusing on the devastating
impact of her disease on her loved ones' lives.
Deana passed away on January 12, 2007. At that time, the Deana Hughes Memorial Fund was created with the intent to allocate the
money to the charities Deana was passionate about. However, in 2008, family and friends formed the DLH Foundation, which strives to
honor Deana's memory through continuous effort to "create a community for a cure." While the eventual goal is finding cancer
cures, along the way we hope that as our community of care grows, it can provide information, resources and advocacy for patients
and their families struggling along the journey of a cancer diagnosis.
